How Much Does 3 Cubic Yards of Sand Weigh?

In short

Three cubic yards of dry sand weigh about 3.9 tons, or 7,800 pounds, at roughly 1.3 tons (2,600 lb) per cubic yard. Wet sand can weigh 15 to 25% more, so a 3-yard load can reach 4.5 tons or more.

The weight of 3 cubic yards of sand

Sand is sold by the ton or the cubic yard, so you often need to convert. Dry, loose sand weighs about 1.3 tons per cubic yard (around 2,600 lb), which puts 3 cubic yards at 3.9 tons, or 7,800 pounds.

tons = cubic yards × 1.3
pounds = cubic yards × 2,600

Why the number moves

Moisture is the big factor. Damp or rained-on sand holds water between the grains and can weigh 15 to 25% more than dry sand per cubic yard. Sand type matters too: fine masonry sand, coarse concrete sand and play sand differ slightly, and compaction changes how much fits in a yard. Treat 1.3 tons as a planning value and ask your supplier for the figure they use on tickets.

Can your truck carry 3 yards?

Three yards of dry sand is nearly 4 tons, far above the payload of a typical half-ton pickup, which often carries only 1,500 to 2,000 pounds. For this amount, have the sand delivered by dump truck or make several trips with a heavier-duty truck and a trailer rated for the load. Overloading is dangerous and can damage the truck and the road.

How much sand do you actually need?

For a sandbox, bedding for pavers or a base under a slab, work out the volume first and convert second. A 4 × 4 ft sandbox 6 inches deep holds only 0.3 cubic yards, while 3 yards would cover a 100 sq ft area 10 inches deep. Use the sand calculator or the sandbox sand calculator to find the volume, then the yards to tons calculator to convert.
