All walls, floors & roofs →How to estimate building and landscaping materials
Every material estimate starts with the same step: turn your project into area or volume. Area (square feet) drives paint, flooring, drywall, roofing, tile and sod. Volume (cubic feet or cubic yards) drives concrete, gravel, sand, mulch and soil. Multiply length × width for area, then multiply by depth for volume.
Next, add a waste allowance. Cuts, spills, uneven ground and breakage mean you almost never use exactly the theoretical amount — 5–10% extra is typical, and 10–15% for diagonal tile or complex roofs. Our calculators include a waste field so you can set it for your project.
Finally, convert to the unit your supplier sells: bags, yards, tons, gallons, boxes or bundles. That conversion is where most DIY mistakes happen, and it is exactly what these calculators automate.
