Wallpaper Calculator: How Many Rolls Do I Need?

Calculate how many rolls of wallpaper to buy for a room, allowing for doors, windows and pattern matching.

Quick answer

A 12 × 12 ft room with 8-ft walls, one door and two windows needs about 14 single rolls of wallpaper (7 double rolls) at 28 sq ft usable per roll, including 10% extra for pattern matching. Formula: net wall area × 1.10 ÷ usable sq ft per roll.

How to calculate wallpaper rolls

Find the paper area you need, add an allowance for pattern matching, divide by the usable area of a roll, and round up. Usable coverage is lower than the printed roll size because matching and trimming consume paper.

wall area = 2 × (length + width) × height − doors (21 sq ft) − windows (15 sq ft)
rolls = wall area × (1 + pattern allowance) ÷ usable sq ft per roll

A typical US single roll is about 20.5 inches wide and 16.5 feet long, which is roughly 28 square feet before matching, and rolls are usually sold as doubles. European rolls are narrower and longer. Always read the roll's width, length and pattern repeat on the label.

Pattern repeat

Straight patterns and textures need the least extra. Large half-drop or random-match patterns can add 15–25% in waste. Order everything at once so all rolls share the same dye lot, and keep a spare roll for repairs.

Peel-and-stick and murals

Peel-and-stick rolls are usually narrower (about 20 inches) and shorter, so divide your wall area by the usable coverage printed on the pack. Murals are sold as complete sets: measure each wall's width and height and compare with the mural dimensions.

If you'd rather paint, switch to the paint calculator; prep walls first with the drywall calculator if you're patching.
