Cubic Feet to Cubic Yards Calculator
Enter a volume in cubic feet (or another unit) and see it in cubic yards, cubic feet and cubic meters. Handy for bagged mulch, soil and concrete.
To convert cubic feet to cubic yards, divide by 27, because a cubic yard is 3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft. For example, 54 cubic feet is 2 cubic yards and 100 cubic feet is 3.70 cubic yards. One cubic meter equals about 1.308 cubic yards.

Cubic feet to cubic yards: divide by 27
A cubic yard is a cube that is 3 feet long, 3 feet wide and 3 feet high. That is 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet, so the conversion is one division.
cubic feet = cubic yards × 27
Example: 100 cubic feet ÷ 27 = 3.70 cubic yards. Going back, 2.5 cubic yards × 27 = 67.5 cubic feet.

Bags to cubic yards
Mulch, soil and gravel bags are labeled in cubic feet, usually 1, 2 or 3. To find how many bags make a cubic yard, divide 27 by the bag size: 27 ÷ 2 = 13.5, so about 14 two-cubic-foot bags per yard. For 1.5 cubic feet it is 18 bags and for 3 cubic feet it is 9.
A quick way to estimate in your head
Dividing by 27 is awkward, so many people divide by 30 and then add about 10%. For 100 cubic feet: 100 ÷ 30 = 3.33, and 3.33 plus a tenth is 3.67, which is close to the exact 3.70. Use the calculator when the order matters.
Reading product labels
- Bagged mulch, soil and sand are labeled in cubic feet. Multiply the bag size by the number of bags, then divide by 27 to compare with a bulk price per yard.
- Bulk deliveries are quoted in cubic yards, sometimes in tons for stone and sand.
- Readymix concrete is quoted in yards, while premix bags state their yield in cubic feet on the bag.
Mistakes to avoid
- Dividing cubic feet by 3 instead of 27. A yard is 3 feet in each of three directions, so the volume factor is 27.
- Dividing square feet by 27. Volume needs a depth first: area × depth in feet.
- Mixing inches and feet. Convert inches to feet by dividing by 12 before multiplying.
- Forgetting that bags hold less than they appear to once poured and spread: check the stated coverage.
If you start from length, width and depth instead, use the cubic yard calculator. For specific materials, the mulch, topsoil and concrete calculators work out both yards and bags.
